Walking Through the Psalms
“But deal well with me, O Sovereign LORD, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good.” – Psalm 109:21 (NLT)
“Because of Who HE Is!”
“But deal well with me, O Sovereign LORD, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good.” – Psalm 109:21 (NLT)
“Because of Who HE Is!”
David was handpicked by God to be the king of Israel. He became the “standard” by which all other kings were measured. He was a passionate, unashamed worshipper who danced for God like nobody was watching, even though EVERYONE was watching. He had a faith in God that enabled him to attempt and achieve things like few ever have. He wrote songs to God that we’re still singing three thousand years later. And he was known as a “man after God’s own heart.”
But in spite of all of these accolades, notice how David frames his request to God. “Rescue me because YOU are so faithful and good.” David knew that, in the final analysis, his “good deeds” amounted to nothing. His “holiness” amounted to nothing. His “accomplishments” amounted to nothing. So, he wisely didn’t ask God to answer his prayer because he, David, was so faithful and good. Instead, he asked God to answer his prayer because GOD is so faithful and good!
This is a great lesson for us. I think it’s easy for us to believe sometimes that God “owes” us. We try to be good. We try to be nice. We read our Bibles, say our prayers, and go to church. We drop a few coins in the plate and stop by the nursing home once a month to see our moms. Though we never say it out loud, internally we’re keeping score. We’re only scoring the GOOD STUFF, of course, but we somehow feel that it gives us an inside track to God granting our requests. But it doesn’t. God doesn’t respond to our prayers because WE are good. God responds to our prayers because HE is good!
That should give you great hope today. As you come before God to make your request, you don’t have to plead the case of your perfect track record. You don’t have to convince God you’re worthy of His attention or deserving of His gifts. Because deep inside, we all know that we’re not. But you can pray expectantly before God today, because even though WE’RE not all that faithful and good, HE is! His love is pure. His record is spotless. When He was on this earth, He lived a perfect, sinless life. That’s why the Hebrews writer reminds us that it is because of Jesus that we can “come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Hebrews 4:16) So, come BOLDLY before God today for whatever you need. But don’t plead YOUR faithfulness and goodness. Plead His. That’s God’s Word for you today.
