Powerful Words from the Prophets
“He was sitting on a lofty throne…” – Isaiah 6:1 (NLT)
“A Not So Common King”

“A Not So Common King”
Have you lost your sense of “awe” when it comes to God? It happens sometimes. We get familiar with the stories of the mighty miracles God has performed so that hearing about them no longer “Wows” us. Healer, Redeemer, Deliverer, Savior…those words roll off our lips so easily that they lose their ability to humble us, amaze us, or even move us. It's not that we stop believing in God. It’s just that we stop being fascinated by Him. Which is why we need an Isaiah-experience from time to time to remember again who God really is.
When Isaiah saw the Lord in this vision, “He was sitting on a lofty throne.” Isaiah was reminded that his God was a king. Not just “a king,” but the “King of Kings!” The word “lofty” is translated in other versions as “high and exalted,” and “high and lifted up.” The point behind that description is not to signify that God is royal, but to signify that His Reign and His Rule are above every other throne and every other king in all of creation. He is the Highest of the Highest. He is the Greatest of the Greatest. There is no king like him, and no one compares to Him. In this fresh glimpse of God, Isaiah catches a renewed sense of the Honor and the Majesty of God.
I think that sometimes we’ve so “commonized” God that we lose sight of His Majestic nature. We like to think of the God who is “one of us.” He walked among us. He got down into the muck and the mire with us. He is approachable, touchable, and knowable. But we forget that He is only that way because He MADE IT SO. The only way that we can understand Him is that HE enlightens us. The only way He has become approachable is because HE has made it possible. We become royalty only because HE adopts us into His Family. We don’t come into His Presence because we are worthy to be there. We are there because our King has a kind and benevolent heart and has opened the door for us.
Sit with this thought today. Catch a fresh new vision of how awesome, how majestic, and how exalted our God really is. Let it restore a sense of humility to your relationship with Him. Let it give you a new appreciation of grace. Let who He is remind you of who He has transformed YOU to be: A Child of God. A Prince or Princess. A Friend of the King of Kings. Can somebody say, “Wow!” That’s God’s Word for you today.
