Powerful Words from the Prophets
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” – Isaiah 11:1 (NLT)

“God’s Resurrection Power”
Life from death. That’s a specialty of God’s. But I think we have a hard time really embracing and believing that. We seem to have faith that God can heal—make someone well who has been sick. I think many of us believe that God can work in hard situations to make them easier or in challenging circumstances and bring about good. But do we really believe He can RESURRECT? That’s a whole different animal.
Mary and Martha sent for Jesus when Lazarus was sick. They had no doubt that Jesus could come, touch their sick brother, and make him well. But Jesus didn’t come. And so Lazarus died. When Jesus got to them, their response was telling. “Lord, IF YOU HAD BEEN HERE, our brother would not have died.” Read between the lines of that statement. “It’s too late. There’s nothing you can do.” That’s when Jesus uttered those immortal words: “I am the resurrection and the life.”
Our passage today is a prophecy foreshadowing that resurrection power. Israel would be overrun and taken into exile. There would only be a remnant that would remain. The glory days of King David would fade into memory. But the promise of God would live on! Think about this fact: it would be 600 years from Isaiah’s prophecy before Jesus came. The silence of God was deafening. Though many thought the days of God working among them were gone, they were wrong. God preserved a stump of His people that led to the birth of His Son, which gave life to MANY. The history of God’s People, as Israel, had to die to give life to the future of His People EVERYWHERE. That’s the power of the resurrection!
That resurrection power remains today! Bring the broken remnants of your life to the Lord and just watch how He brings New Life. Those dead in sin can be raised to walk a life of righteousness. Those who have suffered from generations of addiction can become the stump through which God can give the coming generations the hope to walk in freedom. Your dead marriage can live! Your dead ways can change! Though you may have been bound for years by habits you’ve not been able to break, hurts that you’ve not been able to heal, or failures you’ve not been able to let go of, God offers you His Branch of hope. Jesus Christ is STILL the resurrection and the life. Because He lives, SO CAN YOU! That’s God’s Word for you today.
