Powerful Words from the Prophets
“Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.” – Isaiah 6:2 (NLT)
“Trusting God with What We Don’t Know”

“Trusting God with What We Don’t Know”
When I was studying this section of scripture for my sermon last Sunday, I was fascinated by the description of the seraphim who were attending to God and praising Him. First of all, one commentator pointed out that this is the only place in the Bible where heavenly beings are called “seraphs.” It led me down the path of wondering just how many different “heavenly beings” there really are. Angels, archangels, seraphs, cherubim… And what about all the other spiritual realm creatures, like demons and such? Are these like spiritual “distant cousins?”
The word translated “seraphim” comes from a word that means “burning one.” Perhaps this is a description of the brilliance of their appearance. Which is really cool considering the brilliance of the God they were surrounding was so bright that they had to cover their eyes with their wings! It’s interesting that not only couldn’t Moses look at God, and we can’t look at God, but even the heavenly beings can’t. That’s the brilliance of His Glory.
Here is where all of this is leading me to. I realized as I was reading and processing this, that for all I know or think I know about God, there is SO MUCH that I don’t know. And that’s okay. I don’t understand how things work in the spiritual realm, and I’m okay with that. I had someone who had several questions about heaven a week ago, and I smiled and said, “I have no idea; I’ve never died!” I don’t even understand completely how or why God does what He does among us here on earth. But you know what? I’ve been around Him long enough that I trust His love, and I trust His leadership.
I say this to you because I know that there may be some of you who are struggling in your faith because you can’t figure it all out. There’s some scripture or idea that you can’t understand. God didn’t answer a prayer the way you think He should have, and you’re upset. Something happened, and you don’t know why God didn’t prevent it. Welcome to the club. All I can say to you is two things. One, put faith in God’s character when you can’t understand His actions. Two, if we COULD understand everything about God, He really wouldn’t be that big of a God, now would He? My guess is that even our “distant spiritual cousins” haven’t figured it all out yet either. So put faith in what you DO know about God and just trust Him with what you don’t. That’s God’s Word for you today.
