Powerful Words from the Prophets
“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” – Isaiah 11:2-3 (NLT)
“There Is No One Like Jesus”
“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” – Isaiah 11:2-3 (NLT)
“There Is No One Like Jesus”
Our passage today continues the prophecy about the coming of Jesus. Jesus was unlike any “man of God” who had gone before Him. He wasn’t just another judge. He wasn’t just another prophet. He wasn’t just another king. Jesus was God in the flesh. He didn’t just have the hand of God upon Him. He WAS the Hand of God! Whereas in the olden days of Israel, the Spirit of God would come upon someone temporarily to perform a task or speak a word from God, Jesus would be one upon whom the Spirit of God rested.
Take another look at what that meant about the person and ministry of Jesus. “The Spirit of wisdom and of understanding.” Jesus didn’t teach like the scholars of His day. It was said that when He spoke, it was as one who had authority. In other words, as one who truly knew what He was talking about and had the right to say it. He also spoke with a discernment that knew the needs and the hearts of those He spoke to. That’s why the crowds flocked to Him wherever He went.
Walking in the fullness of the Holy Spirit also meant He demonstrated “the Spirit of counsel and of might.” The word counsel might be considered as the wisdom to lead and advise. Jesus knew what was best. He knew when to stand fast, and He knew when to walk away. Jesus knew how to guide His disciples because He was The Guide. He also operated out of the might or power of the Spirit. Though many men of God before Him performed miracles, there were none who did what He did. He turned water into wine. He walked on water. He multiplied fish and loaves. He made blind eyes see, lame legs walk, and deaf ears hear. He healed those with leprosy, epilepsy, and a host of other diseases. He even raised the dead.
The last part of our verse says He walked in the fullness of “the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” Jesus knew what humans couldn’t know. He knew things about God that no other person knew. He knew secret things about others, like the woman at the well, that startled them. He knew things about others, like their intentions and true natures, that they didn’t even know themselves. He knew what was coming and what it would mean. The “fear of the Lord” means that Jesus was in complete alignment with the Father. Though they were separate, they were One. He lived for One Purpose: To accomplish the will of the Father.
This Jesus that Isaiah prophesied about was not just another hero in the history of faith. He wasn’t just another man through whom God worked. This was God working among men. The Spirit of God worked through Jesus because the Spirit of God consumed Jesus. And there is none like Him! That’s God’s Word for you today.
