Powerful Words from the Prophets
“In the night I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek you.” – Isaiah 26:9 (NLT)
“Stop Running Out of Gas!”
I heard a great story some time ago about a woman and her husband who were driving along a highway. They happened to notice a late-model Cadillac with its hood up, parked at the side of the road. Its driver appeared somewhat perplexed and agitated. They pulled over to see if they could help. The stranded driver hastily and somewhat sheepishly explained that he knew when he left home that he was rather low on fuel, but he had been in a great hurry to get to an important business meeting, so he had not taken time to fill up his tank. The Cadillac needed nothing more than refueling. The couple happened to have a spare gallon of fuel with them, so they emptied it into the thirsty Cadillac, and told the other driver about a service station a few miles down the road. Thanking them profusely, he sped off.
About twelve miles or so later, they saw the same car, hood up, stranded at the side of the road yet again. The same driver, even more embarrassed than the first time, and even more agitated, was pathetically grateful when they pulled over again. You guessed it: he was in such a hurry for this business meeting that he decided to skip the service station and press on in the dim hope that the gallon he had received would get him to his destination. It’s not rocket science, but it is a fact of life: Cars need gas. No matter how nice a car you have, you have to fuel up.
Ever wonder why some people seem to be able to trust God when others seem to be falling apart? Have you noticed how some people can keep their anger under control, their impulses under control, and their mouths under control more than others of us? They’re running on empty. Discouragement, despair, and frustration are the signs of a spiritual empty tank. When we’re not filling up on the goodness, the presence, and the power of God, it’s no wonder we’re falling apart. And the thing is, WE CAN FILL UP ANY TIME WE WANT!
Isaiah says, “In the night I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek you.” He reminds us that God is always there when we call upon Him, morning or night. In other words, our “filling station” is right beside us all the time. We simply have to take the time, stop what we’re doing, open our hearts and minds, and lean into His Word and His Spirit. Take time today to fill your tank before you ever leave the house. And if you start feeling empty along the way, just step aside wherever you are and let God pour into you the life and strength you need. He’ll have you back on the road in no time flat. Keep your spiritual tank FULL! That’s God’s Word for you today.
