Powerful Words from the Prophets
“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.” – Isaiah 28:16 (NLT)
“Jesus, Our Cornerstone”

“Jesus, Our Cornerstone”
On June 4, 1979, the American Institute of Architects met in Kansas City for its annual convention. Many of the architects opted to take a tour of the newly built Kemper Arena, now called the Hy-Vee Arena. Built in 1976, the architects marveled at the structure, calling it a “masterpiece.” Its unique design was said to give the building “an almost awesome muscularity.” The architects who visited that day all dreamed of designing an award-winning building like Kemper. The next day, after a night of high wind and rain, Kemper Arena collapsed.
Life is shaky and unpredictable, isn’t it? Just when you think things are calm and peaceful, chaos breaks loose. War breaks out. The stock market crashes. Natural disasters take place. Just like that, the whole world seems to be falling apart. Or how about on the home front? You go to work one day and find out you don’t have a job. You go in for a check-up and discover you have cancer. You get a call from the school and find out your child was discovered with drugs on them. You sit down to dinner, and your spouse tells you they no longer want to be married. Life comes at us FAST and HARD. If you don’t have a secure foundation, your life can collapse faster than Kemper Arena.
Isaiah’s prophecy about the coming of Christ as the Cornerstone is one of the most famous passages in Scripture. Both Paul and Peter quote it in their writings. It is the reminder that Jesus is not just another part of our faith. He is the REASON for our faith. The Jews had faith in their Temple, but their Temple would be pillaged, torn apart, and burned. They had their Torah and their Traditions, but words, rituals, and festivals were not enough to hold them together when life was falling apart. Jesus did what nothing else could do. He was the Power and the Presence of God. He is the only door to our salvation and is the foundation of our faith. He’s the Cornerstone that all else is built around. Paul tells us in Colossians that it is “in Him all things hold together and all things consist.” When our world is falling apart, we can hold onto Jesus. Better yet, Jesus holds onto US!
Is YOUR world shaky right now? Has your peace turned to chaos and your serenity to insanity? Welcome to planet Earth. It happens to all of us sooner or later. Make sure you build your life on something that can’t be shaken. Make sure Jesus is YOUR Cornerstone. He’ll keep you strong when all else falls apart. That’s God’s Word for you today.
