When I read this verse, I felt sorry for the Psalmist. Like most godly men of his time, he was seeking for God. He wanted to know the direction God had for his life. He wanted to know if he was doing the right things with his life. He wanted to live in a way that would be pleasing to God, and he wanted his life to be positioned to be blessed by God. He wanted the light and truth of God to guide him. All worthy goals. So, why did I feel sorry for him? I felt sorry for him because he longed for the same things we long for, but all he got were bits and pieces of that light and truth. We got Jesus!
A few weeks ago, we celebrated Easter. It was the defining day of human history. It was the day when Jesus proved He was who He claimed to be: God in the flesh. Up until Jesus, the world only caught glimpses of God. God gave them laws, spoke through prophets, and did some pretty spectacular miracles. But He was still mysterious to them, shrouded in smoke and hard to fully comprehend. Then Jesus came. Jesus never said, “Here’s some truth” or “There’s some truth.” Instead, He said, “I am the Way, THE Truth, and the Life!” Jesus never said, “Look over there for the light.” He told those around Him, “I am The Light of the world!” Jesus never told His disciples to follow the endless laws that the religious leaders had come up with or any man-made creed or set of rules. What He said was, “Follow ME!” Jesus was the bodily fulfillment of the Psalmist’s prayer.
You don’t have to guess what God is like. All you have to do is read the Gospels. You don’t have to go up on a mountain to find God. God has come to you. You don’t have to find a wise man somewhere to help you understand truth. Truth has made Himself known to you. You don’t have to wonder how to live, how to act, or how to please God. Jesus modeled all of that for you. You don’t have to wonder anymore how to be right with God. Jesus removed that mystery forever. “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 NLT) When you have Jesus, you have it ALL! That’s God’s Word for you today.
