There are two kinds of friends. There are friends who tell you, “Let me know if you need anything,” but you know they don’t mean it. They just say it because that’s the kind of stuff friends are supposed to say. It’s not that they don’t love you, they do. It’s just that they don’t like to be inconvenienced. Right now, there are faces coming to your mind. You know who they are.
But there’s another kind of friend. These are the friends who also say, “Let me know if you need anything.” But you know these friends mean what they say. These are the friends who are not only WILLING to help you, they are the friends who LOVE to help you! When they hear you took on some hard task by yourself, they say, “Why didn’t you call me?” They are the friends who are blessed by blessing you. They truly enjoy taking some of the load off of you and making your life a little more bearable. These are the friends you TREASURE. They are loyal. They are sacrificial. And they are RARE.
God is that second kind of friend. Look at that second phrase in our verse today: “Always ready to help in times of trouble.” Sometimes I think we forget that. God doesn’t have to be begged to help. He doesn’t have to be bribed or flattered or bargained with to help. God is that Friend who loves you more than any other. He LOVES it when you invite Him into your life, into your struggles, and into your places of need. God loves to be WITH YOU. He loves it when you lean into Him, call out to Him, and cling to Him. Let this blow your mind: God is BLESSED by blessing you. He’s that Awesome Friend who will spend hours walking with you, working with you, and helping you. Then, when it’s all over, He’ll THANK YOU for inviting Him to be a part of it all. THAT’S a real friend!
