Money can buy you anything, right? Wrong. In fact, while money can buy you a lot of “stuff,” it can’t actually buy you anything of significance. Think about it. Money can’t buy you character. You either have it or you don’t. Money can buy you an audience. But it can’t buy you respect. Money can buy you companions. But it can’t buy you love. Money can buy you a church building. But it can’t buy you the presence of God. Money can buy you the medical treatment that can possibly extend your life. But money can’t stop death nor buy you eternity. This is the point the psalmist is making today.
But notice the last line. “But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave.” This prophetic statement, which is a great description of the resurrection of Christ, is also an amazing promise to us. What we can’t afford has already been purchased for us. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He declared, “It is finished!” That phrase could also be translated as, “Paid in full!” The price for sin was beyond our reach. The pricelessness of eternity was worth more than all the wealth of the world. So God used the currency of heaven, His One and Only Son, and HE made possible that which was impossible for us to obtain. Ironic, isn’t it? The most precious, unaffordable gift in the entire universe, and God offers it to us for free.
Are you rich? Good for you. You’ll be able to have a lot of nice stuff in this life. But don’t forget that your riches will only go so far. The REAL stuff of life isn’t things that have a price tag. They are GIFTS. Gifts that people give us, like love, respect, and friendship. And the gifts God gives us, like joy, peace, and grace. And, of course, the most precious gift of all is the gift of redemption and eternal life. The psalmist was spot on. You can’t buy your way out of the grave. But God’s gift of Jesus has already paid your way out for you. Be sure to claim your gift before it’s too late. That’s God’s Word for you today.
