Do you have a hard time trusting? Some of us do. For very good reasons. Many of us have had people in our lives who made promises to us that they didn’t keep. They borrowed money and never repaid it. They told us they would be there, and they never showed up. They made commitments to us that they didn’t follow through with. We told them something in confidence, and they swore they would never tell anyone. Then they told. After that happens once or twice, you grow a bit hesitant about trusting again. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME!” As painful as it is to admit, there are people whom we love and care deeply about, but we’ve come to realize that we just can’t trust them. So we play our hand a bit closer to our chests now.
That actually may be why some of us have a hard time trusting God. We’ve been burned before. Will trusting God be any different? Yes. David assures us that God is more than a promise-maker. He is a Promise Keeper. Yes, God is powerful. Yes, God can do amazing things. Yes, God sees all, knows all, and is over all. But there’s something deeper and more assuring than all of these things. God is also GOOD. You can trust God because He is not greedy. You can trust God because He does not go back on His Word. You can trust God because He does not seek His own benefit ahead of you. You can trust God because He is infinitely more committed to you than you are to Him. When all others bail on you, God remains. He is the essence of Character. He is Good.
So if you’re licking your wounds a bit from someone whom you thought you could trust and have found out you can’t, my heart goes out to you. Broken trust = broken heart. But as you put the pieces back together, let me assure you of this. Though many will hurt you, turn on you, and disappoint you, there is One that you can rely on. He’s a man of His Word, and He will do what He says. You can count on Him, even when you can’t count on anyone else. He’ll never leave you or forsake you. He’s committed to you. He is God. And He is Good. That’s God’s Word for you today.
