Walking Through the Psalms
“But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive!” – Psalm 54:4 (NLT)

“God Is Our Helper!”
Several years ago, in a Sunday message, I showed a video clip of an amazing story. A family who was on their way home from church in the summer of 1997 was hit broadside by an ambulance. The father was killed instantly. The mother was hurt but was quickly stabilized by EMTs. The 8-year-old was so buried in the back by the wreckage that they almost didn’t see him. When they found him and got him out, he wasn’t breathing. They resuscitated him. He died two more times that day. They were able to bring him back each time. He had suffered severe head trauma and was in a coma. The doctors gave the mother little chance of her son’s survival. If he did somehow survive, they told her that, because of the head injuries, he would be like a baby without the ability to walk, talk, or feed himself.
But Landon Kemp DID survive. Not only that, but two weeks later, when he came out of the coma, he showed NO signs of brain trauma whatsoever. Then, when his mother sat with him to tell him about the death of his father, he told her he knew. He said he had seen his father in heaven when he himself had died! He knew things he couldn’t have known and recognized people he knew nothing about beforehand. Now an adult in his 30s, Landon and his mother use their amazing story to give hope to others who have experienced death and loss. Here’s a YouTube link so you can hear their story for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eTKh7xM7DQ
Their story is a great testimony of our verse today, and it gives such incredible hope to all of us. God was their Helper in the midst of a horrible situation. God was the Only One who could have possibly kept Landon alive and then returned him completely healed to his mother. And if God can do all of that for them, just think what He can do for YOU!
Do you need a Helper today? Are you hanging on by a thread and needing the Lord to breathe life and hope into you? God is NEAR. He can work in the midst of the most trying of circumstances. He is your Hope when there is no hope. He is the One who can defy the odds, pull off the unbelievable, and yes, even restore life to the lifeless. Your situation may be overwhelming, but with God, it is never impossible. God took their broken bodies and gave them healing. He took their bleak outlook and gave them a miracle. Then He took their grief and gave them a ministry that’s still going on to this day. He can take care of you. That’s God’s Word for today.
