My youngest son and his wife have recently adopted a child. The process is a lot harder and more difficult than many people understand. It can take years from the time you start the paperwork to when you finally have the child. There are home studies to be done, evaluations to be made, and references to be checked. There are also significant costs that come with adopting as well. Once the adoption goes through, there are all the transitions and adjustments that families go through to integrate the child into their new home. The family has to adjust to the child as much as the child has to adjust to the family. I’m not sure if adopted children fully appreciate all that is involved along the way. Hopefully, one day they will. The love their parents have for them is a special kind of love. These children were born out of their hearts, not their womb. They didn’t just “happen.” They were CHOSEN long before. It just took a while for that love to come to fruition.
The Psalmist reminds us that we are ALL adopted children. God CHOSE us. God chose YOU. God knew centuries ago that you would need Him. He knew that you would need a Savior who could forgive your sins. He knew that you would be lost and helpless, like a confused lamb, and that you would need a Shepherd. He knew that you would need a Father who would love you, care for you, and protect you. He knew that you would wander from time to time. And He knew that you would be stubborn once in a while.
He knew that you would sometimes go your own way, make your own choices, and fall flat on your face repeatedly. He knew that you would break His heart. He knew that you would never fully understand Him. He knew that adopting you would cause a lot of adjustments. He knew that the price would require a great sacrifice from Him. But from the moment He saw you, He knew you were worth it. No matter what the cost. No matter how long He has to wait. No matter the process. To Him, you are worth the journey. You are worth the sacrifice. You are worth the wait. You are His “special possession.” You are more than loved. You are CHOSEN. You didn’t just happen. You were born out of the heart of God. The day His Love came to fruition in you was the happiest day of your Father’s life. Because that’s the day you became His Child. And you were finally Home. That’s God’s Word for you today.
