Sometimes God’s blessings are not obvious. I asked a friend of mine in church some time ago about how his construction business was doing. He complained that they’ve been so busy that he hasn’t had a chance to get away to his land, where he hopes to eventually build a “getaway” home. I laughed and said, “Yeah, I’ll bet you’ve been crying all the way to the bank!” In the construction business (or most businesses), “busy” is a blessing. It’s income. It’s job security. It’s food on the table, and bills being met. The problem is, it doesn’t always “feel” like a blessing. It just feels like fatigue, stress, or being overwhelmed. Because it feels that way, we sometimes miss the fact that God is in the midst of the very things that we sometimes complain about.
Take another look at our verse for today. The people of God were in captivity. They had been taken from their homes, their land, and their place of worship. They were once a conquering nation. Now they are a conquered nation. I doubt that there were many days they woke up and thought of themselves as “blessed.” But they were. Their captors could have treated them much more harshly. But God “caused their captors to treat them with kindness.” It wasn’t an obvious miracle. It was buried beneath the shame and humiliation of their circumstances. They were probably so focused on their pain and their problems that they never even saw the blessings God was giving them in their exile. Yes, they were in captivity. But if not for God, their captivity might have been more than just an extended detainment. It might have been a living hell.
Remember that God is not just in the obvious blessings that you see. He’s also blessing you in many ways that you don’t notice. Like that diagnosis that was bad, but early enough to be treated. Like that accident that totaled your car but didn’t take your life. Like all that overtime that you’re working, that is going to pay for that bill that you don’t know is coming. Like that relationship that didn’t work out, that would have ended being HORRIBLE if it did.
So thank God today for every blessing that you notice. But I want to challenge you to do something more. Thank Him for the ones that you don’t see. And if you’re feeling bad because your work is too busy, just ask that guy who’s been out of work for a while if he’d like to trade. I’ll bet he can see the blessing you can’t! That’s God’s Word for you today.
