Walking Through the Psalms

“The Hysterical Strength of God’s Love”
Lauren Kornacki was looking for her father to borrow the car. She went outside where she thought he was, but didn’t hear him. She then went back inside and asked her mother where he was. “He’s outside working on the car,” her mother said. So Lauren went back outside again. That’s when she found him. He was unconscious and pinned underneath the car that had slipped off the jack. Lauren screamed for her mother to call 911. She could tell that her father wasn’t breathing and knew she had to do something fast. But what she did next was unbelievable. She lifted the car off of him, shoved it to the side, and began performing CPR! By the time the paramedics arrived, she had him breathing again.
Though he suffered from 5 broken ribs and a fractured sternum and vertebrae, he was able to make a full recovery. He was more than thankful for his quick-thinking, super-human daughter. She’s not superhuman, though. She’s not even all that strong. It’s called “hysterical strength.” Scientists don’t quite understand it, but it’s real. Somehow, people in times of crisis are sometimes able to do things that they could never do in normal circumstances. Many feel it’s a burst of adrenaline caused by fear, excitement, or terror. Or sometimes, it could be caused by love.
God has a love like that for us. Except the “hysterical strength” of His love isn’t momentary. It’s an ongoing, ever-present, relentless love. His love is powerful enough to pursue us for a lifetime. His love is strong enough to put up with years of resistance, years of avoidance, and years of rejection. His love will move mountains to reveal Himself to us. It will topple any walls to get to us. It will chase us to the utter ends of the earth. Once God’s love DOES get to us, it will lift any weight of sin from our hearts, break any chains of bondage on us, and fight off an army of demons from hell who try to restrain us. It’s a “while we were yet sinners” kind of love. It’s a “sent His Only Son” kind of love. It is powerful beyond measure.
So today, wherever you are, if you find yourself pinned beneath the weight of life, gasping for breath, do not worry or fret. I can assure you that your Father is already on His way to you. There is nothing weighing you down today that He cannot lift. “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” That’s because God’s love has a “hysterical strength.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
