Walking Through the Psalms

"God's Awake So You Can Sleep"
Several years ago, I spent a few days with my grandkids when they were living in Baltimore. The second night, as usual, I was still up long after everyone else had gone to bed. About 20 minutes after they had all turned in, my grandson Maddox came downstairs. He looked at me sheepishly and said, “Grandpa, I’m a little scared. Can I sleep on this other couch beside you?” I smiled and said, “Of course, buddy. You go to sleep, and I’ll carry you upstairs and put you to bed when I go up.” With that, he pulled the blanket up over his head and went right to sleep.
The next night, as I tucked him in his bed, he said, “Grandpa, if I get scared again tonight, can I come down and sleep by you?” I said, “Sure, Bud. Just come on down if you’re scared.” Fifteen minutes later, he was downstairs on the couch again beside me. I’m not sure how frightened he really was. I think there was just something comforting to him knowing that there was someone awake beside him who loved him dearly and would watch over him while he slept.
Maybe sleep has come a bit hard for you lately. There may even be some of you who are reading this, and you’re only reading it because you couldn’t sleep! Then this is for you. Did you read what the psalmist wrote? God is watching over you. And you know what? He loves you even more than I love my grandson. Let the troubles of your day go. Give Him the worries that have been plaguing your mind. You don’t have to fear. You don’t have to fret. You don’t have to worry about what might happen while you’re asleep. God is awake. He is ALWAYS awake. And He is watching over you.
So turn off the light, pull up your favorite blanket, and just picture your Heavenly Father sitting right there in the room beside you. He’ll take care of those boogeymen under the bed. He’ll take care of those monsters in the closet. He’ll take care of all those fears, all those worries, and all those problems. You don’t have to take your troubles to bed with you. You can give them to God. Just like Grandpa, He’s going to be up all night anyway. That’s God’s Word for you today.
