Walking Through The Psalms
“Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted.” – Psalm 127:1 (NLT)

“Make Sure You Get the Foundation Right!”
Several years back, Dartmouth College was in the midst of a $200 million building project when it suddenly came to a halt. The construction company told the college the bad news: The 70-foot deep foundation hole they had dug was ten feet further south than it was supposed to be. Construction was stopped for more than a month before they were able to work out a solution. They didn’t disclose how much the delay and changes in plans ended up costing them, but they admitted it could be in the millions. What makes this whole story a bit humorous is the fact that the new building is to house the Thayer Engineering School. If anyone understands the importance of getting the foundation right, they would be the ones.
Not building a facility correctly can be costly. Not building a home correctly can be disastrous! The psalmist reminds us that we need more than good blueprints. We need more than just the best wood, steel, and bricks. We need more than a pretty lot in a nice neighborhood. We need God.
In a time when it seems like the culture around us seeks to pull our families apart, we need the power of God to hold our homes together! Marriage is hard work. We need the patience of God, the grace of God, and the binding love of God for husbands and wives to flourish together. Parenting is challenging for the BEST of us. We need the wisdom of God, the compassion of God, and the strength of God to love and lead our children well.
Many of our homes go through times of great grief and suffering, and we need the comfort of God to endure. There are times when our homes go through deep hurt and brokenness, and we need a healing only God can provide. We hurt each other. We disappoint each other. We fail each other. That’s when we need the forgiveness and resilient faithfulness of God. God is the solid foundation that we can build our homes upon. If we don’t get that one right, none of our superficial amenities will matter.
Is God the builder of YOUR home? Is He truly the foundation that you are trying to build your family upon? If not, I’d suggest you take a step back and start over. Make a commitment to put God FIRST in your marriage. Make the commitment to make Him the CENTER of your family. Make the commitment to make Him your model, your guide, and the glue that holds your home together. Get THAT right, and all the other stuff will come together. Miss that one, and you’ll discover just how costly a poorly planned foundation can be. That’s God’s Word for you today.
