Powerful Words from the Prophets
“This message was given to Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message in visions two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.” – Amos 1:1 (NLT)
“God Chooses Nobodies”

Has it ever startled you how much belief God has in us? He gives important assignments and high-level roles to people that Jesus would refer to as “the least of these.” He had Samuel anoint David, a lowly shepherd boy, to be a king. When Jesus was looking for a group of men upon which He could found the Church, He didn’t choose society’s “cream of the crop.” It was a bunch of ragtag fishermen, tax collectors, and zealots. Sometimes God uses the inadequate to prove that it is truly Him at work. HE is our sufficiency.
Our passage today is another example of God doing that. God wants to send another prophecy of warning to Israel. So does He raise up one of the great religious leaders of the day? No. Does He seek out an orator who can keep people sitting on the edge of their seats? No. Does God look for someone famous? Does He call upon someone whom everyone would know and have confidence in? No. He picks a no-name nobody from nowhere. A shepherd from the town of Tekoa.
So don’t be surprised when God picks YOU. You may not be well-educated. You may not be the smartest or most talented. You may not feel like you have any of the qualities that you think are important to do the job. But trust Him. God has His reasons. He sees things you don’t and knows things you don’t. Besides, it won’t really be YOU doing the work. It’ll be God through you. And He IS talented enough! If you feel like you’re a nobody, not worthy of such an opportunity, you may be absolutely right. But that’s okay. God chooses nobodies. That’s God’s Word for you today.
