Powerful Words from the Prophets

“Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” – Amos 3:3 (NLT)
“The Three-Legged Race”
Have you ever participated in a three-legged race? Awkward, isn’t it? Especially if your leg is tied to someone much taller, shorter, or wider. Your stride is different from theirs. You want to go at a different speed. Sometimes one of you wants to win at any cost, and the other is more concerned about just surviving. Here’s the kicker: Those are just the challenges you have when you both AGREE on your goal!
Imagine with me two people being tied together, and one wants to go left while the other wants to go right. Or one wants to walk backwards while the other wants to go forward. Or maybe one wants to walk among the trees while the other wants to walk in the open field. When two people don’t agree on where they're going, chaos ensues. They trip each other up. They fall a lot. And typically, there’s lots and lots of fighting.
Now you understand why so many marriages struggle. We don’t agree on where we’re going. We don’t agree on what kind of marriage we want to have and where we want it to go. So we pull at each other. The same is true in churches. One of the great secrets of the power of the first-century church is found in Acts 4:32. “All the believers were united in heart and mind.” Oh, there were things they disagreed on and things they had to iron out along the way. But they agreed on where they wanted the church to go and were committed to follow God’s path to get there.
Amos uses this passage today to describe the breakdown between God and His People. Israel couldn’t be “God’s people” unless they were willing to “walk with God.” They claimed to be the “chosen people.” They pointed to their history and their ancestry as proof of their “specialness.” But they were choosing paths that weren’t God’s paths. They were choosing a lifestyle that wasn’t acceptable to the Lord. They were getting further and further away from Him. And God was trying to pull them back.
This is a great question for us to process today. Are we “walking with God?” Not, are we “saved,” or do we consider ourselves “Christian,” but are we on the same path as God? Are we submitted to His Will and His Way in every area of our lives? Or are we pulling at Him or even walking away from Him because we want Our Path? Listen very carefully. We don’t have intimacy in a marriage just because we said vows at an altar one day. We have intimacy because we seek to walk together EVERY DAY. We don’t have fellowship with God just because we prayed at an altar one day. We have fellowship with God by walking with Him each day. The journey of faith is not a sprint. It’s a three-legged race. Let’s make sure we’re going the same way God is. That’s God’s Word for you today.
